“Such a high to go into the festive season with, and an amazing weekend with the travelling faithful.”
That was the reaction of home-and-away Angel Liz Somerford after the thrilling and, it has to be said, unexpected win at Torquay on Saturday.
Liz was one of 31 Tonbridge fans to make the trip to Devon, many of whom had also made long trips in dreadful weather to Bath and Chippenham in recent weeks. If the latter had brought particular disappointment, then the trip to Plainmoor to meet the high-flying Gulls more than made up for it.
Liz added: “It was the best football I’ve seen us play this season and a fantastic result. 31 of us outsung 3000 home fans and the after match celebration with Sophie and Brian Purves was the icing on the (Christmas) cake.”

Another Angel who rarely, if ever, misses a game is Alex Burr who, along with Adam Barden, Ethan Burbidge and Ollie Leeson made a weekend of it: “We sang all match and received lots of plaudits from Torquay fans after the game. The singing after the game when the players came over to clap the fans was great.”
Matt Davison of the Angels media team said: “This was an example of why never to rule out Tonbridge Angels. Every year we have one unexpected away win (Dorking, Ebbsfleet, Dulwich, and Eastleigh the year they went up and we went down). This year we’ve had two. But this one’s right up there. We didn’t fluke it. We earned it. We couldn’t be prouder.”
